Compared to the 5 previous images from Oakland Cemetery, this one may seem a bit plain, but that's OK. This particular stone belongs to Maynard Jackson, the first African-American mayor of the city of Atlanta. Maynard served three terms as mayor, with two consecutive terms from 1974-1982 and a third term in 1990 thru 1994.
There's quite a bit odd about this plot, even though it looks pretty normal. Most noticeable is the flower arrangement on the stone, which was the only one that these eyes could find in the whole cemetery. There's also a great deal of grass around this plot because Mr. Jackson's grave is the only one set in this particular lot and there is fresh sod all around the stone. It was quite surprising to find an area in this place with this much green.
The most odd thing about this particular grave is the angle it was set at. As you can see, it is very much facing a different direction than the other plots in the background and is the only one in this cemetery place at an angle. Why? Mayor Jackson requested to be buried at an angle so that he would be facing the city that he loved and served, and as you can see from this image, downtown is easily visible in the background.
This is the 7th and final entry from the Oakland Cemetery and I must say, it has been great fun processing these images, not to mention the amazing fun it was to take them in this amazing place. When I tweeted that I was going to a cemetery to take pictures and after I posted a few, several people offered up other cemeteries for me to check out, which I hope to some day. I doubt that they will have the impact that this one did on me.
There's something to be said for spontaneity and gut feeling. This trip to Oakland was not planned and was very much a lucky draw. Even up to the last afternoon in Atlanta, I had no idea this place even existed and only out of a bit of desperation did I click on the link to this place, but after looking at their site, I had a hunch it would be cool, not knowing that it was much more than that. If visited, these other cemeteries will be planned out and have certain expectations as result. Even if visually comparable, they likely will not have the same impact.
I highly recommend taking a walk at Oakland if you're in the area, even if you don't carry your camera. It is a truly peaceful place with loads of interesting and beautiful things to see.
poor justification for math

One of those pointless textbook pictures that math teachers falsely believe will motivate you to study math. Often used to show the Fibonacci sequence in natural forms, and bore students who would rather hang out at the mall.
Happy New Year

A Happy New Year to all my Flickr friends - for some of you, it's already 2010, for others, it's half a day away. It's still a few hours away here, but I'm off out for the evening, so I'll wish you all the best for 2010!!
The picture is of a dry flower arrangement of my Nan's - the teddy bear is made of straw, so not really a 'cuddly' toy!
