Dirk's shrine. This was where he was killed.
Admittance to this room was controlled, but it still had a bunch of people in it every time I went there. Drinking, laughing, smoking, crying: It was precisely what Dirk would have wanted. However, it's still quite unsettling to party somewhere where someone had been shot less than a week prior.
Definitely a lot of cognitive dissonance going on: You want to have fun -- and Dirk would have wanted us to -- but you feel sad and guilty at the same time. It was the most surreal party of my life. I hosted people from other states. I even hosted someone I'd never met without my knowledge: Dude was in my house when I woke up, having flown in from New York. I saw people I hadn't seen for years. It was an amazing experience, but totally not worth the price of Dirk's life.

BACKSTORY: Dirk's planned birthday party became a wake, after he was shot and killed with his own antique rifle, by his ex-military girlfriend Cara Cottle, on February 15th, 2010. Some 400 to 600 people attended what turned out to be the largest house party I've ever seen. It's exactly what he would have wanted. R.I.P., Dirk.
