Tesco Plant Arrangement

This flower appeared after Kay pruned (or should I say attacked...) my then sorry-looking Tesco plant arrangement. I'm in shock that it's actually still alive, let alone flowering!

The little bud has since opened up and I have TWO flowers! Wooo!

And yes, there is a theme here... Spring has set in nicely now so it'll probably be similarly themed pictures for a while!

Photo number 23 in the "Photo a Day" Series

So Close to Spring

Gourgous flower arrangement I painted yesterday - this was probably the best picture I got. Flowers: roses (mix of orange ruffeled petal roses, and smaller garden rose variety), ranunculus, spray roses, and bluperium for some texture/ added contrast.

Picture A Day July 30, 2009 - Colorful Memories at Batesville Cemetery

Who says cemeteries have to be sad, mournful, staid places? Not the good residents of Batesville! At one time, Batesville was a bustling, quickly growing city in the center of the Winter Garden district of southwest Texas, the county seat of Zavala County, primarily populated by European immigrants and Anglo farmers arriving in the late nineteenth century. But economic changes, neglect and drought took its toll on the community, reducing Batesville to a shadow of its former self. And then over the past few decades, there has been a dramatic growth spurt, as Hispanic families and workers from nearby communities moved in, bringing new life to the town.

This dichotomy is clearly delineated in the town's cemetery. The western half of the cemetery is composed of older gravestones, most dating back a century or more, with English and northern European names and families. Faded, weathered, worn, sometimes broken, often forgotten, with maybe a single bunch of flowers every once in a while.

But the farther east you go in the cemetery towards the newer graves, the tone and demeanor changes dramatically. Most of these graves are twenty years old or less, with bright colors, intricate designs and statuary, absolutely overflowing with various live and fake flower arrangements, and mementos left by caring family members. Instead of the quiet, downbeat feeling found at most cemeteries, with this colorful display it seems the family members are more interested in celebrating the *life* of those passed away, instead of commemorating their *death*. Totally different atmosphere, and interesting to walk down the aisles to see how each grave would seem to try and 'out-do' the previous one as you go along.
