Taraxacum is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. They are native to Eurasia and North America, and two species, T. officinale and T. erythrospermum, are found as weeds worldwide. Both species are edible in their entirety. The common name dandelion from French dent-de-lion, meaning lion's tooth) is given to members of the genus, and like other members of the Asteraceae family, they have very small flowers collected together into a composite flower head. Each single flower in a head is called a floret. Many Taraxacum species produce seeds asexually by apomixis, where the seeds are produced without pollination, resulting in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent plant.

This was a real group effort. The image was taken by my daughter (10) with an off camera mini d9 flash used angled from a high left position held by myself, and the purple blue behind is my wife's t-shirt.

I watched 'Hero' on Film4 last night, and it inspired me to have a go at a wuxia tribute for my 365 picture today. I'm not sure that it's come out quite as well as it could have done, but I'm reasonably pleased with it.

The main body of the picture is one I took in Windsor Great Park back in April, but the two 'warriors' were both photographed today.

Best viewed large, even if it means that you can see the dodgy bits.

So today, I was supposed to choose what I like to think of as the "self torture" lens for my Project 365 -- my Super Takumar 35mm F3.5.

Nothing wrong with the lens, really. It's just so.... normal. It's a prime but not fast. It's a wide-angle, but on an APS-C is almost the equivalent of a 50mm on a 135. It doesn't produce weird colors or textures but rather good, straightforward picture. In a word, it lacks in personality. Probably great for documentary snap photography, and little else.

Which is precisely why I thought it would be a great challenge for me; to photograph something really interesting with that lens, I'd really have to work on it; gimmickery won't cut it.

But then, the Pentacon 6 Tilt Adapter that I ordered around Christmas arrived today, and it changed everything.

That meant that I can now try out my Volna 3 for the first time! The Tak. can wait till tomorrow ;-)

Unfortunately, I didn't get to go outside today, so it's more indoor photography, but my wife had gotten me a pretty bouquet of flowers for my birthday, so I decided to take some shots of that.

Here, the Pentacon 6 Tilt Adapter is tilted upwards while looking down obliquely at the bouquet, creating a very narrow band of selectively focused area that runs through the center of the bouquet, and giving it the impression of a miniature.

I believe the appropriate tune to this would be an ♪M83♪

Just a little flower I shot while I was playing with the S3IS RAW hack firmware. I can't remember whether I took any pictures of the plant itself, but if I did, I'll try and get an ID. If I didn't, then it's Flowerus yellowae. :D
