Here's our ragtag crew on the way down the hill from the Berkeley Botanical Garden, where we went to see the legendary CORPSE FLOWER. Somehow this picture reminds me of the Wizard of Oz mural in the Wilde House dining room.

inside the flower spathe. This bloomed at URI Botanical Garden last night and already starting to lose phallus. The species Amorphophallus titanum, corpse flower or titan arum, is the world's largest unbranched inflorescence. It can reach a height of 2.5 m and a width of 1.5 m.

see uribotanicalgardens.wordpress.com/tag/amorphophallus/ for picture of it in full bloom

smells like rotten meat

On Monday (Feb 5th) I managed to get over to the Eden Project to see the rare flowering of the worlds largest and smelliest flower - the Titan arum (proper name Amorphophallus titanium), also known as the corpse flower.

The Titan arum only blooms for 48 hours before it’s central spike starts to decompose, and on Monday it was said to be 164cm tall (about 5’5”). It originates from the tropical rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia, where its putrid stench has led to its other name, the corpse flower.

You can see it currently on a webcam although this will probably only be available for a short period.

There is also a timelapse video showing the opening of the flower, which I think was taken in 2005 when it flowered last.
