Rattleweed or Locoweed (Astragalus nuttalii)
Plant is plenitful at Montana de Oro State Park. Plant produces flower pictured below.
Photo taken on site with a shadow as bkgd.
Spanish called it locoweed, because animals who ate it became crazed. The other common name, rattleweed, refers to their seeds rattling around in the inflated seedpods.
The closely related Astragalus curtipes looks very much like A. nuttallii, but is not listed as occurring in MDO.
Look closely and you can tell them apart:
1. Is the fruit base stalk-like? A. curtipes.
2. Is the fruit base not stalk-like, and are the stems not more densely hairy than the leaves? A. nuttallii. Dagmar Collins
Astragalus is one of the largest genera as I believe there are some 2000 species. When it gets a little older, and the seed pods have formed, and you open one up, you will find it has the prettiest dark green seeds of almost any plant. These seeds will eventually break off inside, and thus the rattleweed common name too. It also causes many problems for horses and cattle that eat it, thus its other common name of locoweed.
