Colorful Porcupine On A Stick

OK, the title is a complete lie, but I think it's more compelling than "Dahlia". I saw this prize winning dahlia at the San Diego County Fair yesterday, and photographed it by holding an SB600 in my left hand and pointing it at the flower while holding the camera with my right hand. I took a lot of pictures with the flash pointed incorrectly. The flash was in TTL mode and was triggered by the pop up flash on my D90 in commander mode. One of the main benefits of having all of the light come from the flash is that no ambient light is recorded and the background goes black. If anything in the background gets lit accidentally (and that happens quite a bit), you can just paint it black in post processing.

Pictures I've taken over the years at our local fair can be seen here. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157600647070312/

Other plants and flowers that I've photographed using strobes can be seen in my Strobe Lit Plant set. In the description, I list resources that I've used to learn how to light with off camera flash. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157628079460544/...

I spent Memorial Day planting window boxes and patio planters. After steam cleaning myself, I went back out and took pictures. These are the results! Hope everyone is having a nice Memorial Day, including those currently in the armed forces.

Yes, another flower. Emily likes flower pictures. This one is on my porch. Mrs Echo9er says it's either a Zinnia or Dahlia. Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 macro mounted on a Nikon D300s. Tripod and live view with 10 second timer. Other than resize, this is SOOC.
