This time last year ............. at the Chelsea Flower Show 2007
This time last year I was sitting next to this gentleman (not much of a conversationalist) enjoying my latte and croissant and waiting for the gates to open at the show.
I wanted to use this post to thank all of you who responded to my post this past Monday morning with suggestions as to how I could get coverage of the show online. I never was able to get the BBC iPlayer to operate here in the States. Someone told me that the only way to do this is to use a "proxy server" which essentially fools the BBC into thinking that my computer is in the UK. I 'm not much of a techno-person, and when I tried a proxy server, my virus protection software immediately warned me not to enter the site. I do believe that the BBC Programming like the Chelsea coverage will be available worldwide in some legal and approved fashion within a few years.
I also wanted to use this post to follow up with those of you who asked me to put up anything that I did find online about this year's show. As might be expected, this year's online coverage is the best so far by a long shot. The official RHS site itself has several video clips of pretty good quality that I was able to play fairly easily: www.rhs.org.uk/chelsea/2008/live-coverage.asp
The BBC site itself also has some features that can be played outside the UK: www.bbc.co.uk/chelsea/
The best online newspaper coverage that I have found so far is the Telegraph, which sponsored a garden:
www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/main.jhtml?xml=/gardening/e...
You really have to check out the 360 Panorama shots of the best show gardens. They are the best that I have seen so far. The TelegraphTV video clips of interviews with the designers will keep you busy for an hour or so if you watch them all.
There are also some fairly good still pictures and articles as well.
As I had hoped, the pictures of the show posted right here on Flickr already are much better in number and quality than in previous years. If you do a general search for "Chelsea Flower Show", you will get over 11,600 images as of this morning. If you then change the "view" setting to "most recent", it will sort them in reverse chronological order. I would guess that there are already over 1,500 shots from this year's show.
My favorites so far are from fellow contact nbpics, who has been putting up a few extremely well crafted shots at a time all week. When he is finished, you should be able to view them all as a slideshow and have the next best experience to actually being there. (When you have time, you owe it to yourself to view all of the pictures in his photostream. He has some outstanding views of many gardens in England, France, and even New Zealand.)
I hope that the rest of you will feel free to post comments here pointing us to the best online coverage of the show that I have missed or overlooked here.

Tropical Flower

I have no idea what this flower is. I don't think it was labeled, either, but it was growing in the Humboldt State University greenhouse. It was so huge and so vibrant, I couldn't not take a picture. It was literally dripping with nectar.
White Flowers

The trees behind Bessey Hall are blooming. I couldn't help but snap a quick picture and capture the lovely white flowers.
Perfectly colored flower

I found this perfectly colored flower and took a picture, only then remembering it was an IR photo.
Interestingly, the vignette is natural from the terrible IR hot spot in the center of the 24-70mm, which most people claim is a detracting quality. I rather like it though.
