A close friend brought this arrangement as a birthday gift for my mother-in-law. I decided to play strobist with it while everyone was watching a movie.

The arrangement is at the very end of a granite countertop in the kitchen.

On the floor immediately below, aimed along the carpet at the wall behind was a Vivitar 285 on telephoto and 1/4, gelled cyan, set to feather the background on the wall behind. The wall is about 2m behind the arrangement.

On the floor, behind the arrangement at camera left is an amber gelled Sunpak 444d on 1/8. The strobe is about 2m from the arrangement.

Key light was almost directly camera right, about 5m from the arrangement, a snooted Vivitar 285 on full power on a lightstand set to be roughly level with the countertop. I wanted the countertop to catch very little light, and I wanted the background to be lit only by the blue-gelled flash, thus the snoot. My snoot was a little longer than I'd have liked so I couldn't get the falloff to completely cover the tops of the long stalks in the arrangement, but I don't mind the effect.

I was a bit limited in composition by the way the kitchen and surrounding walls were laid out. As it was I had to move some furniture and pictures around. If I'd been able to get a bit further away from the arrangement I'd have been able to get rid of the distracting wall edges in the background.

Given the chance to do this over, I'd probably bring the snoot in a bit more toward the camera to try to get a bit more wrap-around on the main light, or maybe try bouncing some light back from the other side so the arrangement wasn't quite so dark.

Also did a bit of postprocessing to clone the countertop out to the right and get rid of a semi-visible nail on the background wall.
