Nice Lotus Flower Photos photos

Lotus Flower
lotus flower photos
This is one of many Lotus flowers that covered one of the two ponds at the Wetlands Park in Union Township north of Hamilton, Ohio. These are magnificent flowers and the first ones that I've seen in my life.

Some technical information:
Nelumbo nucifera, known by a number of names including Indian Lotus, Sacred Lotus, Bean of India, or simply Lotus, is a plant in the monogeneric family Nelumbonaceae. The Linnaean binomial Nelumbo nucifera (Gaertn.) is the currently recognized name for this species, which has been classified under the former names, Nelumbium speciosum (Willd.) and Nymphaea nelumbo, among others. Names other than Nelumbo nucifera (Gaertn.) are obsolete synonyms and should not be used in current works. This plant is an aquatic perennial. Under favorable circumstances its seeds may remain viable for many years, with the oldest recorded lotus germination being from that of seeds 1,300 years old recovered from a dry lakebed in northeastern China.

A common misconception is referring to the lotus as a waterlily (Nymphaea), an entirely different plant as can be seen from the center of the flower, which clearly lacks the structure that goes on to form the distinctive circular seed pod in the Nelumbo nucifera.[citation needed] Waterlilies come in various colors, whereas the lotus has flowers ranging in hues of white to hot pink.

Native to Tropical Asia and Queensland, Australia, it is commonly cultivated in water gardens. The white and pink lotuses are national flowers of India and Vietnam, respectively.

Swayambhunath (Kathmandu, Nepal)
lotus flower pictures
The night already fell on Kathmandu. I was back there for the first time since the early 80s, enjoying the sight on Swayambhunath from the rooftop terrace of my hotel, and meditating on the fate of a once paradisiac valley.

According to the legend, the Kathmandu valley was once filled with an enormous lake, out of which grew a lotus. The Buddha Manjuri was so moved by the marvelous sight of Swayambhu that he cut a gorge with his Sword of Wisdom through the mountains surrounding the valley in order to make the site more accessible to human pilgrims. The water rushed out in the newly created Bagmati River, leaving the valley in which Kathmandu now lies. The lotus was transformed into a hill and the flower became the Swayambhunath stupa.

Lou Lim Lok Garden

Located in central Macau Peninsula, with an area of 1.78 hectares (about 4.4 acres). It is the only Suzhou style garden in Macau. The garden boasts elegant and peaceful scenes just south of the Yangtze River. This area is known as Jiangnan in Chinese. The garden enlisted in the top eight scenes of Macau in 1992.

Construction of Lou Lim Lok Garden by a wealthy merchant began in 1904 and continued until 1925. It was once the largest private garden in Macau as well as one of the top three beautiful gardens of Macau. This gave the garden widespread popularity. After the merchant's fortunes dwindled, parts of the garden were gradually sold off. In early 1970s, the government of Macau obtained and restored the garden. In 1974, Lou Lim Lok Garden opened to the public.

The elaborately designed scenes in the garden are entrancing. Upon entering, guests will find an old-time archway, followed by paths bordered with flowers and bamboos.

Qingcao Hall (Green Grass Hall) in the center of the garden is the focal piece of architecture, and together with the marvelous pavilions, cloisters, ponds, bridges and rockeries, makes the garden a tridimensional landscape picture. This hall is a masterpiece harmoniously blending Chinese and Western culture. The fence is bright scarlet, a color favored by Chinese, whereas the wall is painted in beige, a color favored by Portuguese. The corridor pillars are Gothic style, with European style engravings of white flower patterns at the top. During Sun Yat-sen's second visit to Macau in 1915, he stayed in this hall and met with many celebrities.

An elegant nine-turn bridge sits above the small pond in the front of the hall. In the centre of the pond stands stone figure of an ancient-time beauty. Stream water pours from the rockery top down to the pond, creating wonderful waterfalls. There are crowds of fish playing about under lotus leaves in the pond. Many visitors enjoy sitting on stone stools in the shade under the weeping willows and looking into the pond. There visitors can enjoy a nice rest and take in the beautiful scenes.

143B-0523 = David's New Flowers in Yard-for May 23 2010
lotus flower picture
Image by ♥ Crystal Writer ♥
Among the many ways David showed that he missed me, was in going out and getting some pretty flowers for our yard. He put them out early Sunday afternoon, so I had a second picture to take for the 143rd day of the year. You can even see the flower spikes still on the ground since I took this while he was actually still working.

The Secret Life of the Blue Lotus
lotus flower picture
I went to the Sarah P. Duke gardens in Durham, North Carolina, a few days ago to enjoy the comfortably mild and sunny weather, just bumming around with two cameras in case I came across something photo-worthy. I'm not a flower photographer at all -- I rarely take pictures of plants -- but I was taken by the sight of blue lotus flowers (Egyptian water lilies) floating on a pond there. Illuminated by the rays of the late afternoon sun at a low angle against the dark backdrop of the pond, with gusts of breeze making them tremble, it seemed like the interior of the flowers were living creatures dancing and glowing. So I used my super-zoom camera to zoom in from a distance on the flowers floating out on the pond to capture the scene.

This flower, the sacred water lily of the Nile, is native to Egypt and was treasured by the ancient Egyptians. Ancient Egyptian wall paintings often show people in social situations holding this plant in their hands. Apart from its beauty and fragrance, the Egyptians believed that it had great spiritual significance, as it was thought that the sun god Ra first emerged from his cradle inside a water lily. And looking at the glowing interior parts of these water lilies the other day, I could certainly see how they could come up with that notion.

Lotus corniculatus

Bird's foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus).

I've been keeping my eye out for any color variations in this local wildflower.

I've found is a few plants with a slight reddish blush on the outside of unopened flower buds. (like this one, or this one.)

In my imagination, I see versions with white or red flowers filling roadsides with a riot of color.

--
Searching flickr has rewarded me with a nice color variation. Too bad I can't get seeds from a picture.

I also found a succulent relative of this plant, Lotus creticus,.

I need to re-adjust the size of the central octogon and fold a nice version, but there are so many other things to pull out of an octogan that I put this scruffy picture up in case I don't get time to have another go, or in case Mélisande* makes the beautiful one!! i haven't seen this done anywhere else, but show me the links if you know of any examples.

March for the Alternative 南無妙法蓮華経
lotus flower pictures
The text on this banner (南無妙法蓮華経) is a Buddhist mantra, the same characters in both old Japanese and Chinese. It is called Daimoku (題目, and sometimes お題目). The mantra is chanted in Nichiren Buddhism, founded on the teachings of a 13th century Japanese monk. One translation of this mantra is: "I take refuge in (devote or submit myself to) The Wonderful Law of the Lotus Flower Sutra". The lotus sutra is an important Bhuddist religious text, a philosophy - in parts more than 2000 years old.

These Buddhists are right trouble makers you know. One minute they are campaigning for democracy in Burma and asking to be banged up in prison, the next they are Marching for the Alternative, whining on about the Cuts... (If you are not native British English, the tone of this paragraph is intended as a joke. Truth be told, it is hard to find an aggressive or angry Buddhist, it is not really part of the deal. Please don't complain to flickr... ☺)

On the right, the spire of Big Ben can be seen - through some foliage - in the background.

Part of a set / slideshow of "point an shoot" images - taken with a very high sensor speed to minimise camera shake (and so with excessive image noise), and hastily fixed in Photoshop. The pictures were taken at the TUC organised "March for the Alternative" in London on Saturday 26th of March 2011, to protest against government cutbacks, and a belief that the economic recovery may be sabotages by the speed and levels of the cuts.

Between a quarter and a half a million people attended. The march terminated in a rally in Hyde Park. Because the numbers of participants were so large, the rally was over by the time I eventually got to the park...

24K inlaid lacquer painting - Tianjin
lotus flower pictures
Size
Length: 3.15m
Width: 0.8m
Height: 2.18m

The gift was presented by the Municipal Government of Tianjin to celebrate Macao’s return to the People’s Republic of China. The main feature of the huge shield is the 24K inlaid lacquer painting. The exquisite graphic design originates from Yangliuqing New Year Pictures. The Yangliuqing New Year Pictures can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644) and are named after Liuyangqing, a town in western suburban Tianjin. The main techniques applied in this work are found in the wood chromatography and freehand drawing. The application of colour is firstly completed by wood block painting and then repainted by hand afterwards. Yangliuqing New Year Pictures are traditionally bright in colour and together with the rich sources of folk legends, historical stories, ancient fairy tales, folk conventions and landscapes, the Pictures have a unique artistic style and a strong local theme.

The picture on the shield depicts a plump Chinese girl, smiling and embracing a golden fish and a lotus flower. This design represents the prospect of success and joy, symbolising the people in Tianjin celebrating Macao’s return. The frame of the shield is made of red wood with a double side cutout of Chinese roses (the traditional flower of Tianjin) surrounded by the fret, implying Macao’s return to the People’s Republic of China. The tops of the columns on both sides are in the shape of a lotus to indicate Tianjin and Macao’s quest for prosperity together.

Lotus in the pond

Lotus in the pond
lotus flower photos
With the rain pouring drizzling over in the bay area and snowing heavily in the Sierras this week, I am forced to stay put and go back to the shots that I have taken.

I have accumulated quite a lot of photos in my collection, some taken at some events, others in meeting with friends but most of them involve travel and landscape photography. That seems to occupy the crux. I seem to have an innate love to travel and see new sights and explore new places. It sure is expensive, but oh so worth it. And I love dragging my camera everywhere just to get a slice of such a vision.

Maybe that is my Valentine eh?

I was digging through my archives to remind me of something different and I came across these shots. The lotus has always appealed to me with its deep saturated colors and the transition from yellow to pink/violet. It is certainly unique amongst flowers.

So here are two shots taken from the Conservatory of Flowers in the Golden Gate Park

Lotus, the National flower of India, symbolizes spirituality, fruitfulness, wealth, knowledge and illumination. The most important thing about lotus is that, even after growing in murky waters it is untouched by its impurity. It is also regarded as a symbol of triumph as it can survive to regerminate after thousands of years.

The so called Black flowered lotus, for obvious reasons. Couldn't resist this offering by Annies Annuals. A quite little plant, now enjoying a warming trend in our weather. The continuous flowers are very surprising - usually takes visitors a bit of time to notice them, but notice they do! They are also very hard to photograph, becoming mere black holes in the photo. it is reportedly a biennial or short-lived perennial, so I'm trying to get some new starts from the only occasional seed pod that forms (have yet to germinate them).

Native of rocky sites on the Cape Verde islands, just off the coast of East Africa.
