Leonardslee Gardens: Woodland Walks

For a few weeks in May of each year, Leonardslee Gardens in West Sussex, UK, erupt into a spectacular display of the most amazing color combinations of flowering rhododendrons and azaleas. The green, wooded valley gardens then turn into a place of vibrant colors and outstanding natural beauty. Filled with the scent of the massed azalea plantings the whole area becomes a forest paradise. Visitors have often described its beauty and tranquility as being like ‘heaven on earth’.

This photograph shows a late afternoon scene of azaleas amongst ancient pine trees at Leonardslee.

For many years, tens of thousands of visitors have enjoyed the ‘picture-postcard’ qualities of this Grade 1 historic garden. Unfortunately, the gardens are now closed to the public as they have been sold to an international businessman.

Details: Leonardslee Gardens is a truly outstanding English landscape garden having a Grade 1 Historic Garden status (English Heritage Register). It covers about 240 acres (97 Hectares) in a wooded valley, contains seven lakes and is extensively planted with azaleas, ancient rhododendrons (some well over 100 years old), acers and camellias - all with a delightful under planting of bluebells in spring.

The great Victorian plant collector, Sir Edmund Loder (who gave his name to the large flowered and scented Loderi Rhododendron Hybrids) purchased the estate in 1889 and planted large numbers of Rhododendrons there. Sir Giles Loder later planted an extensive collection of camellias at Leonardslee. The estate remained in the hands of five generations of the Loder family until 2010 when it was sold to an international businessman. However, the Loder Rhododendron nursery was not sold and is still in business.

Bụi hoặc cây ngắn đời, cao đến 8 m. Đường kính thân đến 12 cm. Lá dài 12 cm, có 6-27 đôi lá con, dài, chữ nhật, 26 mm x 5 mm. Hoa chùm, 2-20 bông, dài đến 20 cm. Quả thẳng hoặc hơi cong, to đến 20-30 cm x 2-5 mm, mầu sáng, thường nâu hoặc nâu đốm đỏ, chứa 10-14 hạt. Hạt 3-4,5 mm x 2 mm x 2 mm, xanh ô-liu hoặc nâu, thường có đốm. Trọng lượng hạt 55-80 hạt/g.

Sử dụng/Ứng dụng.
S. sesban được dùng làm phân xanh và là nguồn thức ăn xanh thu cắt. Có thể trồng xen với ngô, đậu, bông và nhiều cây trồng khác. Lá làm phân ủ rất tốt. Lá là nguồn thức ăn tốt cho bò và cừu. Đã được dùng làm cây cải tạo đất ở đất mặn nam Trung Quốc. Cho củi và làm than hoa. Được dùng làm choái sống cho tiêu, làm bóng mát cho cà phê và nghệ.
Sinh thái
Yêu cầu về đất
Mọc trên phổ đất rộng từ cát đến sét nặng. Chịu mặn (1,0% muối với cây con và 1,4% với cây trưởng thành); chịu đất kiềm và chua cũng như chịu ngập, lụt.
Độ ẩm


S. sesban xuất xứ từ vùng gió mùa, cả bán khô và bán ẩm, với lượng mưa hàng năm từ 500 đến 2.000 mm. Mọc tốt nhất ở đất ngập nước hoặc lụt kế sau là mùa khô hơn.

Nhiệt độ
S. sesban chịu lạnh ở vùng nhiệt đới cao hoặc cận nhiệt đới. Những môi trường này thường có mùa đông lạnh với nhiệt độ bình quân tháng thấp nhất khoảng 7-10oC và nhiệt độ bình quân năm khoảng 17-20ºC. Chịu băng giá nhẹ, nhưng bị chết bởi băng giá nặng.

Sinh sản

Chăn thả/thu cắt
Thường dùng cho thu cắt. Nếu quản lý thu cắt tốt có thể tồn tại đến 5 năm. Có thể cắt khi cây cao 1-2 m. Chậm cắt đến khi cây cao >4 m và cắt sớm dưới 50 cm sẽ làm cây chết. Tốt nhất là cắt khi cây cao 75-100 cm và còn ngọn chồi. Có thể cắt 5 lần/năm tùy vào môi trường và sử dụng. Cắt thường xuyên sẽ giảm tuổi thọ của cây.
Chăn thả trực tiếp sẽ làm cho cây bị gẫy, nhưng dưới chỗ gẫy sẽ tái sinh nhanh.

Thiết lập đồng cỏ
Để làm hàng rào, trồng thành hàng cây cách cây 1-2 m; làm lối đi trồng hàng đơn hay hàng kép cách nhau 2-10 m, cây cách cây 25-50 cm. Để làm thức ăn xanh trồng thành hàng cách nhau 1-2 m với khoảng cách cây 25-50 cm. Không cần tẩm ủ vi khuẩn. Khả năng mọc nhanh cho phép S. sesban khắc phục được sự cạnh tranh của cỏ dại. Cần chà hạt để đạt độ nẩy mầm đồng đều, mặc dù nhiều báo cáo nói không cần.

Năng suất vật nuôi


S. sesban cv. Mt Cotton trồng theo băng trong đồng cỏ tín hiệu (Brachiaria decumbens) cho tăng trọng 0,70 kg/con/ngày ở bò tơ đầy năm trong giai đoạn 15 tháng. Đồng cỏ thả bò trực tiếp trong thí nghiệm này có bị gẫy và chết một số cây S. sesban. Có một số tài liệu nói gây tỉ lệ chết cao ở gia cầm.
Sản xuất hạt giống
Sản lượng hạt có thể đạt 1-2 t/ha. Rất mẫn cảm với côn trùng tấn công và không thể bảo quản lâu hơn 1 năm.

Loài cây này thu hút rất mạnh dư lượng phân bón N ,P, K trong nước và ít nhiều giải trừ tác hại của thuốc bảo vệ thực vật, đồng thời thu hút rất nhiều tôm cá đến sinh sống và sinh sản. Điều dễ thấy là các đám điên điển ở đầu nước thải đồng ruộng đơm hoa rất nhiều phân bố quanh năm, lại là hoa ngon và ngọt giàu chất bổ dưỡng cho các bữa ăn.

Status :
The origins of S. sesban are unclear but it is widely distributed and cultivated throughout tropical Africa and Asia. Until recently, the use of perennial Sesbania species has largely been restricted to south and southeast Asia. In India, these crops have had a long history of agricultural use, primarily as green manures and as sources of forage. Most of the early research on the use of perennial Sesbania for forage production was conducted in India (Patel 1966).

Non-forage uses:

Onim et al. (1989) reported a yield of 16 t/ha of sun-dried wood from a 4 year old stand at a density of 1,600 plants/ha in Kenya while much higher yields of 63.5 t/ha were reported for S. sesban grown under rainfed conditions in Haryana, India (Singh 1989). Despite the lack of detailed information on yield, von Carlowitz (1989) pointed out that S. sesban is popular for fuelwood because it produces a high woody biomass in a short time which, though soft, is a relatively smokeless, quick, hot burning kindling. Sesbania sesban is used to a lesser extent as a green manure, probably because it is not as fast growing as the annual Sesbanias.

The dried leaves of both S. grandiflora and S. sesban are used in some countries as a tea which is considered to have antibiotic, anti-helminthic, anti-tumour and contraceptive properties.

Description
It is a short-lived shrub or small tree up to 8 m tall. Its leaves are pinnately compound, 2-18 cm long with 6-27 pairs of linear oblong leaflets (26 x 5 mm). The raceme has 2-20 flowers which are yellow with purple or brown streaks on the corolla. Pods are subcylindrical, straight or slightly curved up to 30 cm long and 5 mm wide containing 10-50 seeds. Five varieties of S. sesban are recognised botanically but their differences do not correlate strongly with their agricultural value.

Environmental adaptation

S. sesban shows some cool tolerance. It grows well in the subtropics and is significant in extending the nitrogen fixing forage trees into cooler, higher elevation regions of the tropics up to 2,000 m. (Gutteridge and Shelton 1998). It is outstanding in its ability to tolerate waterlogging and is ideally suited to seasonally waterlogged environments. When flooded, it initiates floating adventitious roots and protects its stems, roots and nodules with spongy, aerenchyma tissue. Evans and Macklin (1990) report the rainfall range of S. sesban as 500-2,000 mm. Another outstanding feature is its tolerance of both saline and alkaline soil conditions (Hansen and Munns 1985). However, its tolerance of highly acid, aluminium saturated soils is not known.

Cultivation and management
It is established from seed. Seeds of S. sesban have a hard seed coat and scarification is recommended to ensure uniform seed germination. Domergues et al (1998) recommend inoculation with the appropriate strain of Sinorhizobium teranga when the natural rhizobial population is inadequate.

One of the major advantages of perennial Sesbania species over other forage trees and shrubs is their rapid early growth rates. Dutt et al. (1983) reported that S. sesban attained a height of 4-5 m in 6 months in India. More research is required to determine appropriate management systems to maximise yields of edible material. More studies on the effects of direct grazing in extensive feeding systems are also warranted, for S. sesban, to determine the effects of grazing on plant longevity.

Seed production
Sesbania spp. are pollinated by bees, except for large-flowered species such as S. grandiflora which appear to be pollinated by birds (Brewbaker 1990). Seed collection from most of the perennial sesbanias is easy and large quantities of seed can be rapidly hand harvested and processed.

Crop use and grazing management
Cutting management has a very important influence on its productivity, S. sesban thrives under repeated cutting and coppices readily with many branches arising from the main stem below cutting height. Cutting frequencies have generally been in the order of three or four cuts yearly but up to eight cuts per year have been taken in some. Yields have ranged from 4 to 12 t dry matter/ha/year depending upon location.

Composition
Most reports indicate that the crude protein content of both S. sesban and S. grandiflora foliage is generally greater than 20% and often above 25%. Dry matter digestibility of Sesbania species is superior to that of most other tree and shrub legumes. In northeast Thailand, Akkasaeng et al. (1989) found that the in vitro dry matter digestibility of S. sesban and S. sesban var. nubica was 75 and 66% respectively, all higher than that of 15 other tree legumes that were tested.

It appears that the most economically efficient and safest use of perennial Sesbania forage for ruminants is as a protein supplement to low quality roughages such as crop residues or dried grasses. This dilutes the effects of anti-nutritive factors and greatly improves the utilisation of the roughages.

It appears that the use of the perennial Sesbania species should be restricted to ruminants because of the deleterious effects often observed when they are used as feed sources for monogastrics. However, even with ruminants, there may be adverse effects on animal productivity and health when Sesbania comprises a high proportion of diets for long periods. Research is required to determine whether anti-nutritive factors are present in Sesbania forage and whether they can be controlled or reduced by management practices.

Chemical composition S. sesban (% dry matter).

Onim et al. (1987) speculated that the perennial Sesbania species could fix up to 600 kg N/ha/year. They felt this was possible because Sesbania roots are readily infected by the less specific cowpea types of Rhizobium giving large numbers of active nodules. Under experimental conditions they reported a total nitrogen yield of 448 kg N/ha from the aerial biomass of S. sesban var. nubica.

My wife picked these this morning, and I decided to take a picture of them without my usual black background. For this I used a green gel over my SB600 strobe onto a white background for the contrasting colors. I then used an SB600 and a SB700 in softoxes on either side of the flowers in front at a 45 degree angle for flat even light. I'm not sure if this is an improvement over my usual dark background, but it is a different look. Both strobes were triggered by the pop up flash on my D90 in Commander mode.

There’s gotta be more to life than this. And I’m gonna find it.

In my very first picture, I told you guys that you’d see my emotions through my pictures. I said that this would be like a diary. You’ll know when I’m happy or sad. Stressed or bored. Anyone wanna take a guess as to what I’m feeling today?? Jk. Don’t actually point it out :P

Yesterday, I was saying how I was interested in psychology, and the study of human behavior. Because of that, I’ve had this thing, where I can see which events will lead to this emotion or that behavior and whatever. That whole “emotional wreck” thing I mentioned 3 weeks ago, guess I was right about that :/

Hosta (syn.: Funkia) is a genus of about 23–40 species of lily-like plants native to northeast Asia. They were once classified in the family Liliaceae but are now included in the family Agavaceae by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group. The scientific name is also used as the common name; in the past they were also sometimes called the Corfu Lily, the Day Lily, or the Plantain lily, but these terms are now obsolete. The name Hosta is in honor of the Austrian botanist Nicholas Thomas Host.[1]The Japanese name Giboshi is also used in English to a small extent. The rejected generic name Funkia, also used as a common name, can be found in some older literature.

Hostas are herbaceous perennial plants, growing from rhizomes or stolons, with broad lanceolate or ovate leaves varying widely in size by species from 1–15 in (3–40 cm) long and 0.75–12 in (2–30 cm) broad. Variation among the numerous cultivars is even greater, with clumps ranging from less than 4 in (10 cm) across to more than 6.5 ft (2 m) across. Leaf color in wild species is typically green, although some species (e.g., H. sieboldiana) are known for a glaucous waxy leaf coating that gives a blue appearance to the leaf. Some species have a glaucous white coating covering the underside of the leaves. Natural mutations of native species are known with yellow-green ("gold") colored leaves or with leaf variegation (either white/cream or yellowish edges or centers). Variegated plants very often give rise to "sports" that are the result of the reshuffling of cell layers during bud formation, producing foliage with mixed pigment sections. In seedlings variegation is generality maternally derived by chloroplast transfer and is not a genetically inheritable trait.

The flowers are produced on erect scapes up to 31 in (80 cm) tall that end in terminal racemes. The individual flowers are usually pendulous, 0.75–2 in (2–5 cm) long, with six tepals, white, lavender, or violet in color and usually scentless. The only strongly fragrant species is Hosta plantaginea, which is also unusual in that the flowers open in the evening and close by morning. This species blooms in late summer and is sometimes known as "August Lily".

Taxonomists differ on the number of species; as such, the list at the right may be taken loosely. The genus may be broadly divided into three subgenera. Interspecific hybridization is generally possible, as all species have the same chromosome number (2n = 2x = 60) with the exception of H. ventricosa, a natural tetraploid that sets seed through apomixis. Many varieties formerly described as species have been taxonomically reduced to cultivar status, while retaining Latin names resembling species (e.g., H. 'Fortunei').

Though Hosta plantaginea originates in China, most of the species that provide the modern shade garden plants were introduced from Japan to Europe by Philipp Franz von Siebold in the mid-19th century. Newer species have been discovered on the Korean peninsula as well.

Hostas are widely-cultivated ground cover plants, particularly useful in the garden as shade-tolerant plants. Hybridization within and among species and cultivars has produced numerous cultivars, with over 3000 registered and named varieties, and perhaps as many more that are not yet registered. Cultivars with golden- or white-variegated leaves are especially prized. Popular cultivars include 'Francee' (green leaves with white edges), 'Gold Standard' (yellow leaves with green edges was discovered by Pauline Banyai) 'Undulata' (green leaves with white centers), 'June' (blue-green leaves with creamy centers), and 'Sum and Substance' (a huge plant with chartreuse-yellow leaves). The American Hosta Society and the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society support Hosta Display Gardens, often within botanical gardens.

Hostas are notoriously a favourite food for deer, slugs and snails, which commonly cause extensive damage to hosta collections in gardens. Poisoned baits using either metaldehyde or the safer iron phosphate work well for the latter, but require repeated applications. Deer control tends to be variable, as anything other than fencing tends to work for a few years then cease to work as they become accustomed to it.

Foliar nematodes, which leave streaks of dead tissue between veins, have become an increasing problem since changes in attitudes about pesticides since the mid-1990s in many countries have caused a resurgence in this once-controlled pest. There are no effective means for eliminating nematodes in the garden, although they can be controlled to the point where little or no symptoms are seen.

A virus called Hosta Virus X has become common since 2004 and plants that are infected must be destroyed. It can take years for symptoms to show, so symptomless plants in infected batches should also be considered infected.

Otherwise they are generally easy and long-lived garden plants, relatively disease free, requiring little care other than watering and some fertilizer to enhance growth. Some varieties are more difficult to grow, as can be expected with 5,000+ cultivars, but most are easy enough for beginners.

Smoketree or Smoke bush (Cotinus) is a genus of two species of flowering plants in the family Anacardiaceae, closely related to the sumacs (Rhus). They are large shrubs or small trees, native to the warm temperate Northern Hemisphere. The leaves are deciduous, alternate, simple oval shape, 3-13 cm long. The flowers are clustered in a large open terminal panicles 15-30 cm long with a fluffy grayish-buff appearance resembling a cloud of smoke over the plant, from which the name derives. The fruit is a small drupe with a single seed. Often classified in Rhus in the past, they are distinguished by the leaves being simple (not pinnate) and the 'smoke-like' fluffy flower heads.

The American Smoketree (Cotinus obovatus, syn. Rhus cotinoides) is native to the southeastern United States, from Tennessee south to Alabama and west to eastern Texas. It is a larger plant, frequently becoming a small tree up to 10-12 m tall and with a trunk up to 25 cm diameter. The leaves are also larger, 6-13 cm long; it also has varied but very bright fall color, usually brighter than the Eurasian species. The flower heads are usually sparser than in C. coggygria.

The smoketrees, particularly C. coggygria, are popular garden shrubs. Several bronze or purple-leaved cultivars of C. coggygria have been selected, with warm pink inflorescences set against purple-black foliage; the commonest in commerce are 'Notcutt's Variety' and 'Royal Purple'. When brought into cultivation together, the two species will form hybrids; some garden cultivars are of this parentage.

Cultivation is best in dry, infertile soils, which keeps the growth habit more compact and also improves the autumn colour; when planted in fertile soil, they become large, coarse and also tend to be short-lived, succumbing to verticillium wilt disease. Both species can be coppiced in early spring, to produce first-year shoots up to 2 m tall with large handsome leaves, but no "smoke".

Mô tả: Cây thảo cao 25-50cm, phân nhánh, mọc đứng, thân và cành có 4 góc tù. Lá hình dải -ngọn giáo, thuôn hẹp dài thành cuống, nhọn mũi, dài 4-8cm, rộng 10-15mm. Hoa nhỏ màu trắng trắng ở nách lá, không cuống. Quả hình trụ, nhẵn hơi phồng lên ở đỉnh, dài 15-18mm, rộng 2,5mm, chứa nhiều hạt hình bầu dục.

Bộ phận dùng: Toàn cây - Herba Ludwigiae Hyssopifoliae.

Nơi sống và thu hái: Loài liên nhiệt đới. Ở nước ta cây mọc ở những chỗ ẩm ven các ngòi nước, hồ nước, các bờ đê, gò ruộng, ruộng cạn dần, tới độ cao 1500m, từ Lào Cai, Quảng Ninh, qua Quảng Trị, Thừa Thiên- Huế vào các tỉnh Tây Nguyên tới các tỉnh đồng bằng sông Cửu Long. Thu hái cây vào mùa hè thu, rửa sạch, dùng tươi hoặc thái nhỏ, phơi khô dùng dần.

Tính vị, tác dụng: Vị ngọt nhạt, hơi sít, tính mát; có tác dụng thanh nhiệt giải độc, trừ thấp, tiêu thũng, cầm ỉa chảy và lỵ, mát máu tiêu sưng.

Công dụng, chỉ định và phối hợp: Nhân dân một số nơi dùng các ngọn non làm rau nấu canh ăn và dùng làm thuốc trị: 1. Cảm mạo phát sốt, sình bụng, viêm họng; 2. Viêm ruột ỉa chảy, kiết lỵ. Liều dùng 20-40g khô (hoặc 40-50g cây tươi) sao vàng hạ thổ rồi sắc uống.

Ở Ấn Ðộ, nước sắc rễ dùng trị giang mai.

Ở Lào, cây được dùng trị đau khớp.

Dùng ngoài trị mụn lở sưng đau; lấy cây tươi giã đắp, có khi còn nấu với phèn chua và tro bếp làm thuốc trị nấm ăn chân.

ABSTRACT
30 medicinal plants in Mekong delta were tested antibacterial activity to determine the
minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) on Edwardsiella ictaluri, Edwardsiella tarda
and Aeromonas hydrophila. The result showed that all tested medicinal plants had
antibacterial activity (MIC=16-2048μg/ml). The greastest antibacterial activity against
the experimented bacteria were Terminalia catappa, Psidium guajava, Piper betle and
Melaleuca leucadendra (MIC=64-512 μg/ml). The greastest antibacterial activity against
Aeromonas hydrophila was Terminalia catappa (MIC=128 μg/ml), against Edwardsiella
ictaluri was Eleutherine bulbosa (MIC=16 μg/ml) and against Edwardsiella tarda was
Ludwigia hyssopifolia (MIC=32 μg/ml). In those having significant antibacterial activity,
Psidium guajava had best extract productivity (5,37%) and second Melaleuca
leucadendra (3,37%). This study shows the potential to replace the antibiotics by
medicinal plants in preventing and treating fish pathogens in future.

Plant usually in moist areas. Leaves to 10 cm long, 1-3 cm wide. Petals 4, yellow to orange, stamens 8, capsule to 3 cm long. Seeds dimorphic, seeds in top of capsule paler and shorter than seeds in lower portion, 0.5 v. 0.85 mm long.

This plant has small yellow flowers, with petals about 2 to 4 mm long. There is a similar looking plant with larger flowers, named L. octovalvis, having petals of about 1 to 2 cm long. Each flower should have 4 petals. The flower in the left picture below has 5 petals, which is considered rare. This is the only 5-petal flower I saw on that plant while the rest of the flowers on the same plant have 4 petals. The right picture below shows L. hyssopifolia growing together with L. octovalvis. The plant with long, narrow leaves is L. octovalvis.

Leonardslee Gardens: Rock Garden

For a few weeks in May of each year, Leonardslee Gardens in West Sussex, UK, erupt into a spectacular display of the most amazing combinations of rhododendron and azalea blossoms. The green wooded valley gardens then turn into a place of vibrant colors and outstanding natural beauty. Filled with the scent of the massed azalea plantings the whole area becomes a forest paradise. Visitors have often described it as being like ‘heaven on earth’.

This photograph was taken in the late afternoon sunshine and shows multi-colored azaleas planted beneath a variety of conifers that act as wind-breaks in the historic rock garden at Leonardslee

For many years, tens of thousands of visitors have enjoyed the picture-postcard qualities of this Grade 1 landscape garden. Unfortunately, the gardens are now closed to the public as they have been sold to an international businessman.

Details: Leonardslee Gardens is a truly outstanding English landscape garden having a Grade 1 Historic Garden status (English Heritage Register). It covers about 240 acres (97 Hectares) in a wooded valley, contains seven lakes and is extensively planted with azaleas, ancient rhododendrons (some well over 100 years old), acers and camellias - all with a delightful under planting of bluebells in spring.

In the large rock garden, much of the huge ‘rockwork’ was actually man-made. It was fabricated in 1890 by James Pulham, who became famous for creating landscape features known for their natural-looking artificial rockwork ('Pulhamite').

The great Victorian plant collector, Sir Edmund Loder (who gave his name to the large flowered and scented Loderi Rhododendron Hybrids) purchased the estate in 1889 and planted large numbers of Rhododendrons there. Sir Giles Loder later planted an extensive collection of camellias at Leonardslee. The estate remained in the hands of 5 five generations of the Loder family until 2010 when it was sold to an international businessman. However, the Loder Rhododendron nursery was not sold and is still in business.

sinh phòng trị bệnh cho cá trong tương lai.

ABSTRACT
30 medicinal plants in Mekong delta were tested antibacterial activity to determine the
minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) on Edwardsiella ictaluri, Edwardsiella tarda
and Aeromonas hydrophila. The result showed that all tested medicinal plants had
antibacterial activity (MIC=16-2048μg/ml). The greastest antibacterial activity against
the experimented bacteria were Terminalia catappa, Psidium guajava, Piper betle and
Melaleuca leucadendra (MIC=64-512 μg/ml). The greastest antibacterial activity against
Aeromonas hydrophila was Terminalia catappa (MIC=128 μg/ml), against Edwardsiella
ictaluri was Eleutherine bulbosa (MIC=16 μg/ml) and against Edwardsiella tarda was
Ludwigia hyssopifolia (MIC=32 μg/ml). In those having significant antibacterial activity,
Psidium guajava had best extract productivity (5,37%) and second Melaleuca
leucadendra (3,37%). This study shows the potential to replace the antibiotics by
medicinal plants in preventing and treating fish pathogens in future.

Plant usually in moist areas. Leaves to 10 cm long, 1-3 cm wide. Petals 4, yellow to orange, stamens 8, capsule to 3 cm long. Seeds dimorphic, seeds in top of capsule paler and shorter than seeds in lower portion, 0.5 v. 0.85 mm long.

This plant has small yellow flowers, with petals about 2 to 4 mm long. There is a similar looking plant with larger flowers, named L. octovalvis, having petals of about 1 to 2 cm long. Each flower should have 4 petals. The flower in the left picture below has 5 petals, which is considered rare. This is the only 5-petal flower I saw on that plant while the rest of the flowers on the same plant have 4 petals. The right picture below shows L. hyssopifolia growing together with L. octovalvis. The plant with long, narrow leaves is L. octovalvis.

Rau mương, Rau mương thon, Rau lục - Ludwigia hyssopifolia (G.don) Exell (Jussiaea linifolia Vahl) thuộc họ Rau dừa nước - Onagraceae.

Mô tả: Cây thảo cao 25-50cm, phân nhánh, mọc đứng, thân và cành có 4 góc tù. Lá hình dải -ngọn giáo, thuôn hẹp dài thành cuống, nhọn mũi, dài 4-8cm, rộng 10-15mm. Hoa nhỏ màu trắng trắng ở nách lá, không cuống. Quả hình trụ, nhẵn hơi phồng lên ở đỉnh, dài 15-18mm, rộng 2,5mm, chứa nhiều hạt hình bầu dục.

Bộ phận dùng: Toàn cây - Herba Ludwigiae Hyssopifoliae.

Nơi sống và thu hái: Loài liên nhiệt đới. Ở nước ta cây mọc ở những chỗ ẩm ven các ngòi nước, hồ nước, các bờ đê, gò ruộng, ruộng cạn dần, tới độ cao 1500m, từ Lào Cai, Quảng Ninh, qua Quảng Trị, Thừa Thiên- Huế vào các tỉnh Tây Nguyên tới các tỉnh đồng bằng sông Cửu Long. Thu hái cây vào mùa hè thu, rửa sạch, dùng tươi hoặc thái nhỏ, phơi khô dùng dần.

Tính vị, tác dụng: Vị ngọt nhạt, hơi sít, tính mát; có tác dụng thanh nhiệt giải độc, trừ thấp, tiêu thũng, cầm ỉa chảy và lỵ, mát máu tiêu sưng.

Công dụng, chỉ định và phối hợp: Nhân dân một số nơi dùng các ngọn non làm rau nấu canh ăn và dùng làm thuốc trị: 1. Cảm mạo phát sốt, sình bụng, viêm họng; 2. Viêm ruột ỉa chảy, kiết lỵ. Liều dùng 20-40g khô (hoặc 40-50g cây tươi) sao vàng hạ thổ rồi sắc uống.

Ở Ấn Ðộ, nước sắc rễ dùng trị giang mai.

Ở Lào, cây được dùng trị đau khớp.

Dùng ngoài trị mụn lở sưng đau; lấy cây tươi giã đắp, có khi còn nấu với phèn chua và tro bếp làm thuốc trị nấm ăn chân.

Ðơn thuốc:

1. Chữa viêm miệng: Nấu nước ngậm súc miệng.

2. Chữa mụn lở: Giã lá cây tươi đắp.
