Archive Friday! Anthony picked me a bouquet of paperwhites for Valentine's Day. I couldn't get enough of them and took a bunch of pictures. They made the house smell lovely for days.

I like both these pictures of the wedding bouquets. The one with the flash is better composed and shows the true colors of the flowers well, but the other one is softer. The latter is also a little blurry, though, I think.

Red Maple Seed Development

Acer rubrum setting seeds along the Blue Ridge Parkway - these images are from different trees, but all growing around the same area. If you are close to a female red maple, you can watch this process every spring.
Top left: female flowers before fertilization
Along the Blue Ridge Parkway, you'll have to watch the trees around late March into early April for this stage. They start flowering earlier at the lower elevations and later at the higher elevations. The young flowers are all bunched up together close to the stem. They don't stay very long like this.

Two obvious changes that happen rapidly after the flowers get pollinated are the elongation of the flower stalk for each flower so they no longer appear closely bunched together but rather as a hanging bouquet of flowers and the appearance of two "ears" that will develop into the characteristic wings of the wind-dispersed fruits.

These maples flower before the leaves come out, so at this stage the trees look like they have tiny red foliage (see insert in the middle), coloring the mountain slopes along the Blue Ridge Parkway so intensely that I've had people comment on the "nice fall color" on pictures taken in April. The freshly emerged young leaves often look red as well.

As the fruits mature, they lose some of their intense red color and the trees turn green. This last picture was taken in early May along the Blue Ridge Parkway, but it can take until June in the higher elevations. Eventually, the mature fruits (called samaras) are dispersed by wind blowing the seeds around like little helicopters. You can see these flying everywhere along the Parkway in May.

Now to the reason for my visit to the South Coast on Sunday (as some will already know), not that I ordinarily need an excuse to visit this beautiful part of the country, but this trip has become somewhat of an annual pilgrimage to lay flowers in memory of And (maelstrom4ever) on the anniversary of his suicide at Beachy Head.
After what happened last year at Beachy Head I had to keep my precise travel plans quite secretive, so rather than head down there today which is the actual anniversary of when he was found, I travelled down on Sunday which is most likely the anniversary of the day he actually died.
Whilst Eastbourne was bathed in beautiful blue sunny skies, a few miles up the road on the South Downs the weather was inclement with a thick sea mist descended over the Beachy Head Cliffs which made any attempt at some decent photography neigh on impossible.
I found it really eerie up there so I didn't linger for long, laying just this small bouquet of And's favourite coloured flowers. I couldn't even see the Beachy Head lighthouse so I just selected this spot near to where I think I laid flowers last November.

Tulips
The tulip has great strength as it pokes up from the sod
The strong green leaf surrounds the bud and acts as a façade
Then as the leaves spread open and the colored heads appear
The beauty of God’s planning often cause my eyes to tear
The jagged edge is lacy as it gently opens wide
And as it does,… you will be blessed …by the beauty found inside
The stamen stands so proudly in the center as on cue
And the colors vary greatly in the star shaped colored hue
Their splendor is a statement, yet in a simple way
They give a casual beauty to a lovely new spring day
I clip each color gently as I picture my display
I gather quite a bounty and they form a big bouquet
They grace my table sweetly as they stand so straight and tall
And then with time they curtsey and they take a humble fall
It’s like their bowing over to give their quiet nod
To their talented creator,…to the Great Almighty God
Each time I see a tulip…. my heart is drawn to Him

Another weird picture in front of a wall that no longer exists, because our addition pushed that wall 12 feet back. The speaker behind Carolyn is a rear speaker. We still have a stereo on both sides of this room, even today. But what used to be the main stereo now merely extends the sound from our downstairs computer upstairs. It's also another way to make music, in case our upstairs computers and new stereo all die. Additions really mess with you.
You can see the built-in shelves in the background that Daniel M. Lopez of Laurel, MD, threw away in violation of our contract that stated to move them back with the addition. They used to house our can and bottle collection -- they had to be moved to the attic, where they've been ever since.

Drying flower bouquet on the fire escape. Our escape connects to the apartment next door, and we occasionally try to piece together clues about them. Sometimes I think of how if we lived in a sitcom, we would be best friends with them and crawl in each other's windows instead of using the hallway.
Chris teased me about taking this picture -- "Lizzie, 10-year-old girl detective!" -- but actually he is the one who is always reporting on the street below, and spied both these things.

I personally like tulips in the ground, but a friend was given a bouquet of tulips which she placed in a teeny tiny vase. By the morning, what little water was in the vase was gone and the flowers had almost completely wilted. My sister said that they looked like they were the embodiment of weeping ... so ... viola -- here is the picture that came of her idea.

The Motif
What can I say about it but the title of this picture. It's a Gerbera I took out of a bouquet of flowers brought it to the garden and started shooting.
Technical
Taken with a Canon EOS 350D and the EF-S 60mm macro. Shot at aparture priority (f/2.8) and with manual focus. It was the afternoon of a very cloudy day, so the 1/60 s shutter speed is pretty low. I used bracketing to be able to merge the pictures into HDR if I want to, but it was windy as well, so the wind changed the motive, and there is no HDR version of this shot.

Memories of roses, sweet peas and daisies. I was so sad to leave the bouquet in Calgary when I had to leave 2 days later. I knew airport security wouldn't let me bring the flowers back in water (I know their stems wouldn't fit into a 100ml bottle) so I took a gajillion pictures to remember them by.
EY surprised me with a summer bouquet from his sister's garden while they took a little stroll outside.

BACKSTORY: Although I am pretty thorough with pictures, I didn't want to have all 500+ pictures from Greg & Nicole's wedding. It would have been 1 out of every 20 pics that I have or so, and it would have been no fewer than 27 pages of photos on flickr, and a lot of them would be of people I'd never met. That's a bit too much. I went through and tried to take the best of everything relevant to me, combining some pictures as diptychs, and doing whatever possible to get the total image count down while still capturing an acceptable amount. I was amazed to finally get it down to 77 images, almost all of which were cropped and photoshop enhanced. It took no less than 3 days!
